In summer, Callicarpa 'Magical Deep Purple' is an inconspicuous shrub, forming a quiet green backdrop to border plantings with small pinkish flowers. But its star performance in the autumn is well worth waiting for when its bare stems are loaded with masses of spectacular purple berries which shine like jewels on a bright day. There’s simply no other plant like it. The berries persist for a long time and are avoided by birds due to their bitter flavour.
